The Southern and South-Western Sydney Regional Development Committee Inc. was established in 2018 and has proudly supported the Southern and South Western Sydney Regional Training Awards. Our focus includes areas within Canterbury-Bankstown, St George, Sutherland Shire, as well as the suburbs of Fairfield, Liverpool, Camden, Campbelltown, and Wollondilly Local Government Areas.

The committee consists of key stakeholders from the vocational education and training sector and industry, working together to enhance vocational education within our region. We have been committed to supporting regional Training Awards and recognise the value of celebrating local talent. 

Since inception, the committee has assisted high achievers by providing financial support and networking opportunities. This has enabled many individuals to continue their vocational journey and advance in their careers. Several award recipients have gone on to become leaders within their industries, demonstrating the lasting impact of our collective efforts in nurturing the next generation of skilled professionals.

  • James Barry, known to many as "Poncho", is a tourism professional with decades of experience in sharing stories, culture, and history with visitors from around the world. James completed a Certificate III in Guiding while balancing a very full work schedule at both Hunter Valley Small Group Tours & Transfers and Balloon Aloft; serving on the Board of the Kiray Putjung Aboriginal Corporation; working as an archaeologist for Hunter Transmission Lines; and serving as a retained firefighter with NSW Fire & Rescue.

    James' dedication to serving the community and mentoring the next generation is core to his work, and he’s already planning his next big step- setting up his own Indigenous tourism business that celebrates the rich culture and history of Wonnarua Country.


    James is continuing his VET journey with further qualifications so he can support the growth of future tourism professionals, ensuring they gain essential skills for success.

  • Katarina Ferkula-Cohen completed her qualification while working through the Ignite Indigenous Traineeship Program at Western Sydney University. With a background in administration, she used this opportunity to build on her skills, gain a formal qualification, and step confidently into the next stage of her career.

    Katarina has excelled throughout her traineeship, leading to an extension of her contract and opportunities to act in higher duties. She participated in the Acknowledgement of Country Program, undergoing training and delivering six high-level Acknowledgements at university-wide events using Indigenous languages—an achievement that speaks to both her professionalism and cultural pride.

    Passionate about cultural connection, Katarina helped to lead a student cultural group and mentored peers through their own learning journeys. Her enthusiasm for learning, leadership, and community shines through in everything she does—making her not only a valued member of her team but also a powerful advocate for Indigenous success.

  • Breanna Pilon is an early childhood educator with a profound passion for working with children; embedding cultural awareness in all she does. Her journey began as a high school student volunteering in primary schools and earning her Certificates I & II in Active Volunteering through the Mulgabirra Program. Breanna then participated in the COVID Indigenous Learning Support Program in Dubbo, where she engaged students in learning about Indigenous history and culture.

    Breanna truly thrived when she secured a position as an Early Childhood Trainee. Her positive attitude and respect for others quickly made her a valued team member. Upon completing her traineeship, Breanna transitioned to a full-time assistant role, a reflection of her growth and the impact she has had on the learning environment. Passionate about fostering a culturally safe space for young learners, Breanna looks forward to supporting their developmental journeys while sharing her love for Indigenous culture.
