VET Students Shine Backstage at Schools Spectacular

Few events showcase the opportunities available to NSW public school students like Schools Spectacular. Each year, the production brings together more than 6,000 student performers from across the state. Behind the scenes, more than 150 vocational education and training (VET) students gain valuable hands-on experience while helping deliver one of the world’s largest student performance events. 

The Schools Spectacular experience extends beyond the arena with SpecFest, a free outdoor entertainment hub featuring live performances, interactive activations and food trucks. Delivered almost entirely by VET students, SpecFest provides practical experience in camera operation, vision switching, audio and lighting, show calling, floor management and technical production. Students develop valuable industry skills in a professional live event environment that is unmatched at any other event. 

Across both Schools Spectacular and SpecFest, students work alongside industry professionals to develop technical skills and gain understanding of how large-scale productions are delivered. Students also contribute to hospitality, costuming, graphic design and technical production, as they work alongside the show's professionals. This includes a broadcast production for a national television audience, giving students valuable insight into the live entertainment industry. 

These real-world learning experiences build technical skills, confidence and industry knowledge while supporting pathways into further study, training and employment. Schools Spectacular demonstrates the NSW Department of Education's commitment to delivering high-quality vocational education and training for NSW public school students. 

NSW public school students in Years 10 to 12 interested in joining the 2026 Schools Spectacular student production team should speak with their school and submit an application by Friday 28 August.
